Alright so you want to know what to wear to the airport. Fair question. I've got opinions on this. Lots of them actually because I fly way too much and I've made every clothing mistake a person can make at 35,000 feet.
My worst one ever was a pair of brand new high-waisted jeans. They looked so good in the mirror at home. By the time we hit cruising altitude I wanted to cry. The button was digging a hole into my actual stomach. I ended up unbuttoning them and draping my jacket over my lap for six hours like a weirdo.

The pants situation
I do not wear jeans to fly anymore. Not even my comfy ones. Jeans have no give in the wrong places and the seams press into your legs when you sit for a long time. What I wear instead are these black pants I got at Costco of all places. They look like dress pants from far away but the waist is literally just a wide band of elastic. No zipper. No button. No hardware at all. I can eat a whole airport burrito in these and nothing digs in.
Some people swear by leggings and that works if you get the thick athletic kind with actual compression. The thin cotton ones are a trap. You bend over to grab your bag from under the seat and suddenly everyone knows too much about you.

Shirts and layers and such
This is the part people overcomplicate. You do not need a whole system. You need two things on top and one of them needs to open in the front.
My setup is boring but it works every time. A thin tank top or a t-shirt with a wide neck that does not choke me. Then an oversized flannel or a chambray shirt over it, completely unbuttoned. The flannel is soft from being washed fifty times. It used to be my husband's I think. The open shirt acts like a tiny jacket. If I get hot I take it off and stuff it in my bag. If the plane is freezing I put it back on and button maybe two buttons.
For really long flights I also bring a zip hoodie. The zip part matters a lot because you can get it on and off without doing that awkward elbow dance in a cramped seat. I learned that after whacking my seatmate in the face with a pullover once. She was nice about it but I wanted to disappear.
Shoes that do not ruin your day
Your feet swell when you fly. This is just a fact of being a human in a pressurized tube. So whatever shoes you pick need a little extra room.
I wear slip-on sneakers. The kind with memory foam inside. I've had the same white pair for three years and they look kinda beat up now but I do not care. They slide off easy at security. They slide off easy under the seat in front of me so I can curl my feet up. And if I have to sprint through a huge terminal to catch a connection they do not give me blisters.
Do not wear heels. I should not even have to say this but I still see women in heels at the gate and I just feel bad for them. Do not wear brand new shoes either. Break them in around your neighborhood first like a normal person.
Dresses can work surprisingly well
I was anti-dress for flying for a long time. Then my friend convinced me to try it and she was right. But only a specific kind of dress.
It has to be knit fabric. Jersey or ribbed cotton. Something with stretch and weight to it so it hangs nicely and does not float up when you walk over a vent. Midi length is best because your bare thighs do not stick to the airplane seat. And you should wear shorts under it. The little stretchy kind that prevent chafing. They also give you peace of mind if you fall asleep in a weird position.
I wore a gray ribbed dress with a cropped denim jacket on a flight to Portland once. Looked put together. Felt like pajamas. Got a compliment from the woman next to me who was wearing a full suit and looked miserable.
The scarf thing
I used to think a scarf was just for looking fashionable. No. A big soft scarf is a tool. A piece of equipment.
Mine is huge and black and made of cotton modal blend. I use it as a blanket when the plane is cold. I roll it up and use it as a pillow against the window. I drape it over my head when I want to sleep and block out the overhead light. I wrap it around my shoulders when I land somewhere chilly. One item does four things. That is a good item.
What stays home?
Heavy jewelry is the first thing to go. Necklaces tangle in seatbelt straps. Big earrings poke your neck when you lean your head to the side. I wear tiny studs and that is it.
Anything that buttons tight at the waist. Even if it fits standing in your bedroom. Sitting in an airplane seat is a totally different body shape and you will regret it.
Short skirts. Just no. You spend the whole flight doing a weird tugging motion every five minutes and it is not worth the stress.
Anything dry clean only. Planes are grimy. Airports are grimy. You will want to wash your clothes the minute you get to a washing machine.

The post landing refresh
I have a tiny routine I do about 20 minutes before landing. Bathroom visit. Splash water on my face. Reapply deodorant. A little tinted lip stuff so I do not look like a corpse. Shake out my hair or twist it up into a bun. Brush the lint off my pants.
My clothes are already fine because I chose stuff that does not wrinkle. So three minutes in the bathroom and I walk off the plane looking like a functioning human instead of women airport outfit ideas.
Conclusion
Nobody at the airport cares what you look like. Seriously. Think about it. Do you remember what the person next to you on your last flight was wearing. Probably not. Everyone is too focused on their own stuff. Their own delays and luggage and meetings and whatever.
So wear what makes your body feel good. Soft things. Stretchy things. Shoes that do not pinch. Layers you can take off and put on without a struggle. If you do that you will step off the plane calm and ready. That beats looking stylish in a photo you are never going to post anyway.
